Scary far eastern films ?

i want to go out and get some good scary asian films or action films, any ideas. here are some of the ones i've got already : kung fu hustle, audition, host, warrior king and obviously i know of the 'americanised' films such as ring, dark water, etc

Scary far eastern films ?
Try "Shutters" from Thailand. Kept me awake at night.
Reply:The original Ringu series, the Japanese versions, and the original Grudge are pretty good.

Kept my G/f awake for nights!!
Reply:the ring japanese version
Reply:Thrown of Blood -the Macbeth story told by Kirosawa. Brilliant.
Reply:Three great selections come to mind

Janghwa Hongryeon aka A Tale of Two Sisters is a great Korean horror film that I love that not many people have seen (thats cause it hasnt been remade)

http://imdb.com/title/tt0365376/

Also the movie Batoru rowaiaru aka "Battle Royale" is a good Japanese action/horror/thriller movie. I loved the book, and the movie is a very good adaptation. Not perfect but entertaining and easy to follow for the most part. But anything that involves having 42 Junior high kids kill each other for sport before their electronic collars blow their own head off is bound to be an entertaining fare.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0266308/

Also the Korean film "Oldboy" is great. Very Tarantino in quality. Pretty twisted, some bloody scenes. Overall very full of raw emotion and one heck of an experience from an asian film.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0364569/
Reply:I highly recommend "The Eye" - made about 2002/3, directed by the Pang brothers

don't watch it alone lol
Reply:OOOH, If you want a great action/martial arts movie, check out Ong Bak!!! It's a Thai martial arts movie staring Tony Jaa (bit of a legend in my eyes!).

It has some of the most amazing stunts and fight sequences ive seen since the likes of Jackie Chan and Bruce Li.

It has a story line like a porno...ie. Just enough storyline to tie all the action together ;-) but WHAT A MOVIE!!! 10/10!!!
Reply:Another few are Pulse which has an original Japanese version, Through The Mirror %26amp; Phone which are both Korean I think.

Also if you like Oldboy recommended above, there is also Sympathy For Mr Vengance %26amp; Lady Vengance to complete the trilogy!

Where in the Philippines can i buy The God of Cookery?

I love films starring Stephen Chow...It is action-packed and funny at the same time. Any more suggestions besides Shaolin Soccer, Kung fu Hustle, God of Gambler? Where can i buy God of Cookery (note:not the pirated ones)?

Where in the Philippines can i buy The God of Cookery?
try astrovision. or your local record bars sometimes sell dvds or vcds.

if nothings there, you can always go to quiapo. or greenhills (pero ni-raid na ata).

Reply:In the Phillipines? Forget it! You gotta go , instead, to Bora Bora. And don't forget to send us a post card.

P.S.: While there-don't waste time looking for films.

Can anyone recommend any mainstream foreign films?

I've really started to increasingly enjoy foreign films over the past year, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend any recent flicks that are relatively mainstream or straightforward in tone, rather than something extremely avant-garde/experimental with no coherent plot.

By mainstream/straightforward, I'm talking about stuff like "Good Bye Lenin", "Amelie" "Tae Guk Gai: The Brotherhood Of War", "Crimen Ferpecto", "Children Of Heaven", "Kung Fu Hustle", etc. that have understandable storylines, interesting characters, and perhaps quirky or funny situations.

The language doesn't matter, as I watch films from any country. It can be of any genre, although I'm not a big fan of horror movies.

country.

Can anyone recommend any mainstream foreign films?
- Life Is Beautiful (Italy) - one of my favourite films, for what it is worth, Roberto Bernigni - about an Italian Jewish man and his family in WWII, esp. how he looks after his little son - sad and wonderful story at the same time.

- Monsoon Wedding (India) - a film about a family gathering for an arranged wedding and the different characters and what is going on. I really liked this film too.

- Volver (Spain) - a bit different, but still an interesting film I think. Good cast too, including Penelope Cruz

Good question. Hope you find some more good films to see.
Reply:Two of my favourites are "Zatoichi" (a Japanese martial arts film about a blind swordsman) and "The Red Violin" (a French film that follows the life of a violin through five different countries).
Reply:In my french Class, we're watching these two french films called Jean De Florette and Manon of the Spring (Manon is the sequel to Jean.) They're a little old ('86) but they're really good and the plot is very easy to understand. It's also a little sad. But I think you might enjoy them, if you don't I'm sorry.
Reply:Deepa Mehta's trilogy Fire, Earth and Water (serious)

Battle Royale directed by Kinji Fukasaku (bloody good fun)

What is it?

In the game Tekken 5 Feng uses a Martial art called Godfist. And in the Movie Kung Fu Hustle the shop keep uses the same style. I whant to know what the name of that style is and what it branches from.

What is it?
Feng Wei's style is described as Chinese Kempo, although I am not sure if that helps at all. Chinese martial arts are very broad.

Perhaps if you know someone who can recognise moves, you could show them the game and ask them.

I've noted for instance that Kazuya and Baek share a couple of kicks (particularly the axe kick) but that's due to similarities between karate and tae kwon do.

Godfist is probably a dramatisation.
Reply:"Godfist" is a made up style for the sake of dramatization. However, the style attributed to him is Chinese Kempo. I doubt they studied enough martial arts to make the game realistic in style for each character.
Reply:What is it? It is fantasy. This section is for Martial Arts, go to video games.
Reply:Never believe what you see in the movies or on TV about martial arts...

Talk to your instructor!

Where online can I buy those heavy metal rings that go around the forearm?

As seen in Kung Fu Hustle and Master Killer. Please provide a link to the ring.

I saw them once in Chinatown, NYC but never bought them... maybe I can purchase online somewhere? I've tried ebay, google, but no luck!

Where online can I buy those heavy metal rings that go around the forearm?
I found them on ebay by searching "kung fu rings".

Here's another link for them.

Why america movie rating system often gave asia film rated R instead of PG 13?

Film like kung fu hustle, shaolin soccer, hero all got rated R, i don't think it derserve it, while violent and graphic film like LOTR and Perfect Storm still only get PG 13, what's your opinion.

Why america movie rating system often gave asia film rated R instead of PG 13?
The ratings board is notoriously screwy. They often rate movies in ways that are not consistent and don't make sense.

Can anyone recommend some truly GOOD martial arts flicks?

Jet Li's Fist of Legend

Jet Li's The Enforcer

Jet Li's Fearless

Hero

Kung Fu Hustle

Enter The Dragon

Can anyone recommend some truly GOOD martial arts flicks?
"The Black Mask" is a good Jet Li movie.

But you should really go to the source of ALL Martial Arts movies. You probably think I'm going to say Bruce Lee, and he was phenominal, but the fella I have in mind is, the one, the only,

Sonny Chiba. If you saw "Kill Bill, Part 2", Sonny Chiba was the swordsmith who swore a blood oath to never make another sword until Kiddo showed up and mentioned Bill's name. In the 60s and 70s, Chiba made a series of some of the grittiest Martial Arts movies ever filmed, "the Streetfighter" series, which include, "The Streetfighter", the Return of the Streetfighter" and "The Streetfighter's Last Revenge". Tarantino's character in "True Romance", the one played by Christian Slater, is going on and on at the beginning of THAT movie about Chiba.

"The Streetfighter" movies are Chinese productions, badly dubbed, but somehow fascinating nonetheless, maybe because the stunts are so godawful dangerous and they do the scene anyway, one take, winner takes all. I dont even want to think how many of the stunt fighters got killed or badly injured in some of the fights, (while other "action fights" are so obviously choreographed as to be completely distracting). All the icons (and, at this point, cliches, except THESE are where the cliches got their START) of the Oriental gangs. These movies are bloody, but I promise you, the series will make you look at Jet Li and Jackie Chan in a whole new light.
Reply:house of flying daggers is beautiful and it has some mind boggling moves

Dragon Ball Movie question?

Is there really a live action Dragon Ball movie in the works? I have been seeing several sites, each with different castings and release dates. So is there any truth to this movie?

And if such a movie is being created would it be original? Because the "Matrix" and "Kung Fu Hustle" already feature action similar to that of the DBZ series.

Dragon Ball Movie question?
attack of the show said some of the people casted for the live action movie how true it is i don't know
Reply:Yup. Twentieth Century Fox is behind the movie, and filming's already started in Canada.

It'll be original in the sense that it's a new Dragonball movie, but as far as the action goes, well, it'll probably be been-there-done-that.
Reply:it is in the works but for as how is the cast i dont know they are kinda keeping it secret i guess not all have been revealed it comes out about 15 auguest this year supposidly we will see wont we
Reply:Yes sir, there will be a DB movie (not the absence of a Z) It is scheduled to be released summer 2009 i think (May have to double check that). It will be made by the people who made Kung-fu hustle so that will be awesome and they have already cast Justin Chatwin (war of the worlds) as Goku, James Marsters (buffy the vampire slayer) as Piccolo, Emmy Rossum (Harry Potter) as Bulma, Jamie Chung (the real world) as Chi Chi, Chow Yun Fat (do I even have to say) as Master Roshi, and Joon Park (unknown) as Yamcha. I have mixed feelings about the cast except piccolo because I think James Marsters will be awesome as him.

What are films that used music and dancing in an unexpected delightful way?

Spike Lee having Rosie Perez dancing to Public Enemy's song "Fight The Power" in opening scene of the film "Do The Right Thing" was perfect, also the dancing at the end and music bits slipped throughout "Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman" suprised me.

"Kung Fu Hustle" also was clever with the dancing it put inside it.

Do you know of any films that put music or dancing into a film that was not a musical that really worked for you ?

What should replace karate-type styles in public imagination?

I never bought the choreographed nonsense in the movies about the striking styles of kung fu, karate, tae kwon do etc. I knew they were developed as a way for unarmed people to fight opponents weighed down by armor. After MMA fights became popular, and these striking, high-kicking styles always lost, I figured people would wise up. Instead there's even more absurdly choreographed movies (like Kill Bill, Kung Fu Hustle, Jet Li movies), worsening the public fantasy about the usefulness of these styles.

A style that people actually win with in free fights ought to be promoted to dispel the myth. What should it be - what is the most effective free-fight style, that can also capture people's imagination the way karate did?

What should replace karate-type styles in public imagination?
i think a combo of boxing and wrestling is great if the guy is big but not to slow and a strong puncher and i agree with you that stuff is lame and is usaully unsuccesful in fights
Reply:"After MMA fights became popular, and these striking, high-kicking styles always lost..."

Mirko Cro-Cop has been very successful with a striking, high-kicking style(coupled with a good take-down defense).

Don't judge the effectiveness of a style by how it is portrayed in the movies. With a few exceptions, fight choreography for movies has always been exaggerated and ridiculous.

Due to MMA, people are beginning to see that Muy Thai is a truly effective stand-up style and that BJJ is most effective for grappling. I think these two styles will dominate in MMA and also for self-defence. And we could see in movies and TV action heroes who employ Muy Thai and BJJ skills.
Reply:they look good though and the movies are all about entertainment. i am a bjj guy but even ill admit that fighters like wanderlie, liddell, crocop, Anderson Silva, gsp, shogun are the most popular fighter because they kick peoples teeth down there throat , its more exciting for the general public to see rampage vs Silva kick **** out of each over then renzo Gracie vs Carlos newton giving a grappling clinic, its just the way it is

but we no that bjj rules so thats ok
Reply:I'm afraid it will never get better. There will always be choreographed MA movies. But not because the moves won't work in real life but for the safety of the actors/stuntmen. Yes there are a lot of movies that use fake choreographics and even after being in karate for ten years, I would prefer a gun over my hands/feet. But in the times that we are living in, you got to think. " What if I don't have my gun on me when I need to defend myself?".

Oh and by the way, I don't know about Kill Bill and Kung Fu hustle but I do know that Jet Li is an Awesome martial artist, like Jackie Chan and Stephen Seagal. Their stuff really works. I know, I've studied and practice it.
Reply:Kill Bill and Kung Fu Hustle are SUPPOSED to be ridiculous. Kill Bill is all about paying homage to those crazy MA movies, and Kung Fu Hustle is the same. Plus, they were both comedies. It's like saying that Looney Tunes provide a negative stereotype of the use of anvils and dynamite.

Jet Li movies are a different species altogether. He and his choreographers know what people want to see when they watch a MA movie, and they give it to them. It's all about business.
Reply:Jet Li did wushu, which more of a dance, not kung fu. Kung fu refers to Chinese Martial arts in general, with some styles being more effective than others. Also, karate and tae kwon do are more like sports true combat arts, but they are just easier to learn for little kids, as opposed to BJJ or Muay Thai. Little kids are also intrigued by watching flashy displays of breaking boards in karate and tae kwon do, even though it doesn't have anything to do with fighting ability.
Reply:Real self-defense encounters are ugly things. They are fast, dirty, sloppy, violent encounters.

Movies are made for entertainment. The crowd wants to see the good guy beautifully destroy the bad guy. Then the hero runs into a little bit of trouble and overcomes the adversity to save the situation and win the admiration of the people.

Real life doesn't go down like this which is why we enjoy it as escapism.

Also in real life people don't go on extended missions where by they fight evil for an hour with nothing but there fisticuffs skills.

Art is art. Real life is another matter.
Reply:It is acctually a matter of public opinion, and as we can all see you are definitly a part of the public.
Reply:i personally think a tire iron is the best and you dont need to waste money on lessons.

Can you recommend any good Kung Fu movies?

Does anyone know if there will be a Kung Fu Hustle 2?

Can you recommend any good Kung Fu movies?
For excellent Wu Shu try the Once Upon A Time In China series of films ,especially the ones with Jet Li (Li Lin-jie) as Wong Fei-hung ,or Jet`s remake of the Bruce Lee film Fist Of Fury called Fist Of Legend and my personal likes The Legend Of Fong Sai-yuk (simply known as The Legend in the US) parts I %26amp; II - even if the latter aren`t brilliant examples of acting excellence they are very entertaining examples of the genre (especially the fight sequence choreography) .

Or for just sheer fun try the early Jackie Chan classics The Young Master ,Snake In The Eagle`s Shadow , Drunken Master (a particular fave of mine) and his version of Fist Of Fury which he was in as a stunt fighter (New Fist Of Fury).

If you like Sammo Hung (Hung kam-bo) who did some of the fight choreography for Kung Fu Hustle - he fought Bruce Lee at the start of Enter The Dragon ,there`s his "Bruce tribute" Enter The Fat Dragon ,The Magnificent Butcher (a Wong Fei-hung film) ,his appearance AS Wong Fei-hung in Around The World In 80 Days (feat. Jackie Chan LOL) and the "Lucky stars" films with his "little brothers" Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao or the Vietnam film Eastern Condors.

To name several LOL
Reply:All Jackie Chan movies the old ones are the best.

Does all his own stunts
Reply:Jet Li..pick up any of his..not sure if 'kung fu; is the right expression...martial arts...

Kung Fu, was a series way back when....
Reply:enter the dragon ... bruce lee

infact all bruce lee films
Reply:Enter the Dragon!!!!
Reply:Watch "Enter the Dragon", then watch "Kentucky Fried Movie". In "KFM" there is a movie within the movie. It is called "A Fistful of Yen" and it makes fun of "Enter the Dragon". VERY FUNNY!

Also, "KFM" was the first parody movie made. You have to be at least 40 to really understand many of the mock tv commercials and jokes....but it's a good movie even for those under 40. Lots of crude humor and nudity. Not for little kids.

"....now, take him to be tortured!"
Reply:If you liked Kung Fu Hustle, you might like Shaolin Soccer. It is also a hilarious movie. You will like "Kung Pow" it is extremely hilarious, with fake mouth moving delay and a character called, "tonguey"...don't ask.
Reply:I was going to say Kung Fu Hustle. I loooooovvvve that movie and I've often wondered if they were going to come out with another one, but I haven't heard anything. anyway, the protector is an excellent movie. and anything with jet li is good. fearless, romeo must die, kiss of the dragon, black mask. but definitely watch the protector if you haven't already seen it. crazy stuff. hope this helps.
Reply:yep bruce lee was good enter the dragon was his last film,

jet li is excellant,

chuck norris films are always good (used to spar with bruce lee)

jackie chan best for a good laugh

kung fu was david carridine back when i was a lad

my choice jet li
Reply:I just love all of the Bruce Lee films and I'm a gal lol.

They are priceless in my opinion.
Reply:Any Bruce Lee film, but Enter the Dragon is the best, amazing stuff, better than Jackie Chan any day.
Reply:Enter the dragon has to be the best one, I have watched it so many times i have lost count.
Reply:Enter the dragon, and any Bruce lee film.
Reply:biased as i am... if u want purely brilliant kung fu sequences, you should really check out Jackie Chan's early 80's movies when he was at his peak... specifically... Project A, Drunken Master 2 and Police Story 1 %26amp; 2. You will see things that no one else could possibly do.

just watch this...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaQGvKjUy...
Reply:AAAAHHH Grasshopper, all the wise men will say that the oldies but goodies are the best, Bruce and Brandon Lee, Jackie Chan, Chuck Norris etc. But look out for the new sensation thats gripping the nation, TONY JAA!!!!

go to youtube and type in Tony Jaa - Ong Bak or The Warrior Within and see for yourself. He does all his own stunts, no wires and no computer graphics.....Hes Brill.

Mind and let me know what you think of him
Reply:Try 'Ong-bak' and 'warrior king' staring Tony Jaa. No CGI, no tricks, just amazing fights and stunts. Jaa is incredible. please see these films, you wont be disappointed.
Reply:I love the old Jackie Chan and Jet Li movies made when they were younger. I would recommend you see "Drunken Master" and "Once Upon A Time In China I - III"...awesome fight scenes. What these men could do with just a wet rag is un-freakin-believable LOL. Hope you enjoy these :)
Reply:Drunken Master

2. Unleashed

3. The Crippled Masters
Reply:The Kung Fu Hustle rocks rocks rocks!! Any thing by Jackie Chan is very cool. And Unleashed made me get the hots for the Asian Populace. There's just something about a wounded seemingly helpless man that you think needs saving but then you find out that he can kick thecrap out of anyone. Sighhhh!
Reply:Enter the Dragon is the single best
Reply:1)Rumble in the Bronx. I usually dont like the kung-fu movies that feature the present. but this movie is so... cool.

2)Iron Monkey. The movie that has been made without Jet-li. You know I kinda got bored watching only Jet-li in such super-heroistic movies.

3)The Tai-chi master. but this one I really liked

If you want more then here would be my next choice

4)Romeo must die.
Reply:my all time favourite movies are

1. Matrix

these are all old 1970's Kung fu classics, that are still fantastic to watch today, If you really like a kung fu movie with an excellent storyline and great fights, I would highly recommend these to anybody..they are not the most well known movies, but if you get the chace to see them, I bet you won't be disappointed

Recommend a good Kung-fu movie?

I recently watched Kung-fu Hustle - and would like to watch more movies in that genre. I rented a couple that were recommended on a DVD site - but they weren't as good? Anyone know of good ones?

Enter the Dragon is probably the best martial arts movie ever made, in my opinion.
Reply:You probably want films made in the same era i think. Try - Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Iron Monkey, Drunken Master 2, anything with Jet Li aswell really. Report It

Reply:However if its comedy kung fu you want than you want to see films by Stephen Chow - Flirting Scholar, King of Beggers, Shaolin Soccer and also check out Jackie Chans collection. Report It

Reply:ONG BAK movie is great. no stuntmen. no cables. no ropes. no blue screening. its all action. its a thai movie but i garuantee you will love it
Reply:Crouching tiger, hidden dragon. I think that's what it's called. good movie. I also liked Out for Justice with Steven Seagal, a little violent, but the vengeance factor is cool and when he beats up Sticks - too cool.

Wheels on Meals

Operation Condor

Mr Vampire

Close Encounters of a Spooky Kind
Reply:Try "The Legend of Drunken Master" with Jackie Chan. A little goofy, and the storyline is a lot weak, but great and genuine martial arts.
Reply:As previously said here: Enter the Dragon is a real classic. I'm actually not a huge kung-fu fan, but really like that film and it's one of the cornerstone works that brought HK kung-fu to international attention.
Reply:Try Shaolin Soccer. Its directed by the same guy that did Kung Fu Hustle.
Reply:Ong-Bak is one of the best modern movies in that genre. Tony Jaa does all his own stunts, and they are all real, as opposed to kung Fu Hustle, which is faked and CGI most fo the time. So it isn't quite the same but it is IMHO, better.

If you liked Kung Fu Hustle you will porobably like House of Flying Daggers, and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Reply:Have you seen Kill Bill? I thought that was pretty good. Also try Jackie Chan's movies. He has a lot. Don't forget Bruce Lee! People think he was the best! Also, have you seen Jet Li's Fearless? That is his so-called final martial arts film, so don't miss it. I also recommend Hero, Fist of Legend, and the ENTIRE Once Upon A Time In China collection. There's a TON of Kung-fu movies out there, so have fun!!!
Reply:Bruce Lee movies are good. Old Jackie Chan movies are good too (not the hollywood movies but the olds that were produced in Hong Kong, before he became popular in the US)

here's a list of Jackie Chan movies. Check out the pre-hollywood movies

On a scale from 1-10 what would you rate them?

Has anyone here seen the movies 'Shaolin Soccer', or 'Kung Fu Hustle'? If so, how did you like it/them?
shaolin soccer was absurd, but absolutely worth it. it will crack you up. i give it a 10.

kung fu hustle was great. it's weird at times and a little slow in some scenes. it is very hilarious. i give it an 8. i own the movie. i bought it before i even seen it. great movie.
Reply:kung fu hustle wuz messed up but funny...i'd give it a 8/9

if 10 is the highest..if 1 is the highest,i'll give it a 3/4
Reply:i would give Shaolin Soccer a 6/10

I would give Kung Fu Hustle a 7/10
Reply:I saw both of them They both are good....but shaolin soccer is better....cuzz shaolin got more comedy, %26amp; also got like drama at the end when....they loosing the game (that part is sad)...)..(

What age and up do you reccomend the movie kung fu hustle?

I would say PG-13.. funny violence.. pretty much all there is to it.. nudity is normally what pushes movies into R .. but I dont remember any

I recommend Shaolin Soccer too.. just as funny

What age and up do you reccomend the movie kung fu hustle?
41 and yes I would recommend this movie. Be prepared to read subtitles but very funny.
Reply:reccomend? don't make fun of my spelling when you can't even spell for yourself!!!
Reply:I have seen this movie twice and like it a lot.

It is more of a parody of martial arts films. It is in Chinese, but there are subtitles.

It is not for little kids. It is rated R. I think I would feel comfortable letting 13 year olds and up watch it. There really wasn't that much violence. No gore. People got killed, but it was more of a cartoon violence. There is no female nudity that I can recall at all. It did show a guy's butt--that is all.

DOES ANYONE KNOW ANY INFO ABOUT THE NEXT KUNG FU HUSTLE MOVIE if there is one?

that was one of the dumbest movies I ever saw in my life. A few fighting scenes were interesting, but overall a bizarre film

DOES ANYONE KNOW ANY INFO ABOUT THE NEXT KUNG FU HUSTLE MOVIE if there is one?
i've not heard about a second one, but i really loved the first one!

What are the fighting styles represented in Kung Fu Hustle?

The baker who fights with sticks and spears - Hunggar

The tailor who fights with iron rings - Hunggar

The mover who kicks a lot of people in the face - Spring Legs

The crazy land lady - Tibetan White Crane

The perverted landlord - Taichi

The axe clan - no style, just brutes.

The two assassins - Eagle Claw? plus a lot of CGI.

Crazy killer guy - initially no style, just super fast CGI. Later Toad kungfu does exist in Shaolin.

Main character - Buddha's Palm, a fictional martial art popularized by Wuxia culture. Many of his actual moves are signature Taichi, but could be from many other styles.

What are the fighting styles represented in Kung Fu Hustle?
Kung fu?!?!
Reply:Lion's Roar, Buddhist Palm, and God knows what else. Just watch it again and see what they say.
Reply:im not really specific cuz i haven't watched it in a while... but the movie tells you what they use don't they? the guy give the people the booklets...try watching it in Chinese. It's more accurate than the English version....Dub kills all
Reply:PSE says alot but you have to remember its just a movie.

What is the romantic score in the 'kung fu hustle' and where can I get it?

I am looking to find the romantic score between Sing and the ice cream girl from the movie. I love the score but am not sure what its title is. Would be great if I can know where to download it from too.

Does Anyone Else Here Like Kung-Fu Hustle?

I thought it was one of the best martial arts movies to come out in recent years. It was horribly marketed though, the trailers made it look stupid but it wasn't at all.

That scene with the throwing knives and the snake had me rolling on the floor : P
Reply:I loved it. It wasn't the best to me but it was great.
Reply:I like kung fu movies and I can honestly say it was a good film. It was still a stupid film, enjoyable but stupid.
Reply:i enjoyed it from start to finish. that's what movies are supposed to. leave the docu-films and artsy films to TV.
Reply:It was en enjoyable movie.

Kinda silly, but entertaining.
Reply:I personally don't like many "martial arts" movies as they are generally poorly scripted, poorly produced, poorly acted, and do little to expand knowledge or understanding of the real talents of the artists involved.

I did however really enjoy Kung Fu Hustle. it was funny, tongue in cheek, different and yet paid homage to the typical martial arts movies at the same time. I must also confess, I don't like musicals - but KFH really entertained me and I've been happy to watch it about four or five times now since it came out.

Did anyone see the movie "Kung Fu Hustle"?

Absolutely! This movie was hysterical, even if you have to read the whole thing in subtitles. It's sitting right next to Kung Pow on my DVD shelf.

Did anyone see the movie "Kung Fu Hustle"?
Yes
Reply:I saw the first half hour of it.. it was free on on-demand. Was "interesting" ... I almost saw it in the theaters cause nothing else was out at the time.
Reply:Yes, it was so funny and well directed.
Reply:it's a screamm.....so funny
Reply:yeah, very funny
Reply:Yes. I saw it in the theatre. I had some free movie passes, and I went to see it with my spouse and two friends. It's a fun flick.
Reply:eww no
Reply:Yeah i have seen it....... Its kinda stupid actially...The fights are funny in a not-funny way!!! It hangs somewhere between a spoof and a kung fu movie!! I dont know what the hell did Stephen Chow had i his mind when he made that movie!!

But the strange part is that i liked the movie somewhat!!!

I'm even planning to see it again!!!
Reply:Yeah. It starts out unnecessarily violent, but gets funnier as it goes along. From a martial arts point of view it is very silly.
Reply:yes funny movie
Reply:yeah that movie was hella funny , at first i thought about yawning but then once i got into it i thought it was funny
Reply:Yes, bought the DVD - Funny! If anyone is into kung-fu movies, this is a must see!

He was laughing! We all were!

Is a sequel for Kung Fu Hustle in the works?

And, if so, what's the timeframe for theater release?

Is a sequel for Kung Fu Hustle in the works?
...the film is shooting, even as we speak; since it will probably play overseas, before it hits the U.S. shores, I wouldn't expect to see it, for about a year or so...

...check it out, below!!!

...to whet your appitite, until that fateful day arises, might I suggest you check out the "Kung Fu Mahjong" trilogy; it contains the same irreverant, wacky and screwball martial arts comedy as "...Hustle", and it also stars the same actor %26amp; actress, who played the wacky bully landlord, and her wuss of a husband, in "...Hustle"...

...and in case you haven't seen the film, director/actor Stephen Chow's previous film, before "...Hustle", was indeed "Shaolin Soccer"...
Reply:Awesome to see that there is!

A movie that's also directed by Stephen Chow that you might also enjoy in the meantime is Shaolin Soccer. It has the same sort of bizarre humor as Kung Fu Hustle so you might enjoy it. (Personally, I thought KFH was better, but still...)
Reply:I read about it somewhere, and yes it'll be in theaters before you know it

To those who wacthed Kung-Fu Hustle?

Give your Favorite part

To those who wacthed Kung-Fu Hustle?
Ya know I would LOVE to be that simple, unfortunately, that's not me, so:

My favorite comedic part is when Fat Woman is chasing Sing Looney Tunes style and she hits the billboard, I love how she just slides down really slow and the noise it makes! HAHAHAHAHAHA!

My favorite "instance" in the movie is when The Beast just non-chalantly takes the gun from the Ax member like it was nothing.

My favorite visual moment was when the sequence of Sing getting knocked in the sky by The Beast, accessing The Buddhist Palm, and flying back down.

My favorite WTF moment was EVERYTIME Brother Sum was on screen (dancing after the shotgun, laughing when the Ax member is in the trashcan, and getting his head knocked around by The Beast).

My favorite fighting of course was when Coolie, Tailor, and Donut, fought the Ax gang.

But my alltime favorite part, since you asked, haha, would be the whole sequence of when the Musical Assassins come to Pig Sty Alley.

The fighting, the comedy, the timing, the effects, the dialogue, EVERYTHING! It is one of my favorite sequences of all time!!!!!!!!

Great movie, great question!

God bless,

Kevin Lee

PS-If you haven't seen Shaolin Soccer, it is JUST as good!
Reply:i like where that fat guy was gona throw a knife at that fat yelling lady lol it that scene was hilarious
Reply:when the guy discovers his hidden powers and makes that big hand on th wall lol
Reply:Too hard to give just one favourite part. The movie was so good - although I thought the first half was a bit "slow".

The ending was such a good spoof of The Matrix.
Reply:I concur: the fat guy throwing the knives!

You just have to check out the "Kung Fu Mahjong" trilogy; it contains the same wacky, irreverent, slapstick and cartoonish martial arts-based comedy, as "Kung Fu Hustle", as well as the two actors, who played the bully landlord, and her wuss of a husband in "...Hustle", as well...

...check 'em out, here!!!

Here's a summary/review:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0397853/plot...

It's a "mockumentary" about martial arts actor/stuntman Buford Lee (portrayed by James Lew). It lampoons a lot of martial arts cliches and the actors and directors. Some of it's rather sharp, but there are a lot of laughs that aren't harsh. There's not a lot of raunchiness, and one of the scenes had me laughing hysterically even though I shouldn't have. I never knew that Lorenzo Lamas could be so funny!

KUNG POW: ENTER THE FIST (2002)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0240468/

This has some very funny scenes and some sort of blah ones. You'll recognize "The Matrix" and many other moments in this Steve Oedekirk film that he wrote, directed and stars in. Yes! He's up there with the greats: Orson Welles and Ed Wood! Wait~Did he produce, too? I can't find that info.

YEA! The person below mentions "Shaolin Soccer"! I watched "Kung Fu Hustle" and "SS" end to end about a month ago. I like the first best, but the second is a lot of fun, too.

I just watched it last night. Pretty different...I liked it though.

Has anyone seen Kung Fu Hustle? What did you think?
I've seen it like almost 10 times because it's so funny to me and it's different but its okay. My favorite part is when the wife catches the husband peeping on the lady so when they get back home she beats him up and throws him out the window and the plant falls on his head.
Reply:beginning was weird then I got into it
Reply:Too much "Hustle" and not enough "Kung Fu".
Reply:Loved It!!!! ) i love those types of martial arts movies), and it was so funny, especially the "dancing" scenes
Reply:I really liked the first few minutes, especially the "dancing" scene. Then it just turned dumb and I didn't get into it. The dumbness was deliberate (sort of a spoof) I just didn't enjoy it.
Reply:Hillarious
Reply:I thought it was HILARIOUS!!! I couldn't stop laughing through the whole movie. There were also moments where I had to scratch my head and say, "HUH?!?!?" LOL
Reply:funny.....
Reply:I thought it was brilliant!! It was funny, had some awesome fight scenes in it...all in all a great movie!!!

Here's some more info:
Reply:A really good movie. Love the quirkiness of it, and the humor was solid. Decent fight scenes too.
Reply:EXCELLENT - and I've seen a ton of Kung Fu films...it was funny, well done and had a great story

Question About Kung Fu Hustle?

When I saw the movie I thought that Mr. Beast was Bolo Yueng. Bolo Yueng was in Enter The Dragon as well as countless other martial arts movies. They have the same facial features and fought almost identical and I was surprised that they were not the same person.

Did anyone else think Bolo was Mr. Beast?

Question About Kung Fu Hustle?
your not alone.

Yes mr beast does have an uncanny resemblance to Bolo Yeung..

I think bolo is gonna look like that when he gets old.

the name of the guy who played Mr. Beast is: Siu-Lung Leung. And he's a legend in HK films.

Why is Kung Fu Hustle rated R?

They say "F*ck" twice. PG-13 movies are only allowed 1 "F*ck", if you have two its bumped up to R Rating.

Why is Kung Fu Hustle rated R?
because it's a violence OR shows blood.
Reply:MPAA: Rated R for sequences of strong stylized action and violence.
Reply:Awesome film.
Reply:R for sequences of strong, stylized action and violence.

plants flowers

Why is kung Fu Hustle Rated R?

How many times do they use the the f-word and how violent is it.

Why is kung Fu Hustle Rated R?
There is no gore. I am not sure why it is rated R. Why was Titanic given a PG-13 rating and yet, the main actress was topless, posing nude as Leonardo DiCaprio sketched her image on paper? There is a scene where a guy gets beheaded and a cat gets sliced up, but all you see is their shadows on a wall. You see the shadow of the cat and the man getting cut up. There is no blood splattering. I don't remember the cuss words. It is Chinese and there are English subtitles at the bottom.

If you like these kind of movies, check out Iron Monkey. It is Chinese and it has action and humor, but no gory violence.
Reply:No f words that i know of, but some of the fighting is intence, and you see people shot, stabbed.
Reply:I dont remember any cussing and the violence is light comedy stuff. Dont know why its rated R, its just a comedy.
Reply:The film has no swear, however the fight scenes cause it's rating remember the fighters that get cut up and the the cat that get cut up from the instrument.
Reply:R for sequences of strong, stylized action and violence.

Is Kung Fu Hustle dubbed or is it captioned?

Dont want to see it if its not dubbed, I dont mind if its horrible, I just want it dubbed.

Is Kung Fu Hustle dubbed or is it captioned?
The dub is actually not horrible. The DVD comes both ways.
Reply:I think it's captioned. It is a very good, weird, and hilarious movie. You'd enjoy it.

Kung fu hustle?

is there a rumble that breaks out in the beginning in a theatre?

Kung fu hustle?
The beginning ax fight dance number was tacked on, in order to make the title make sense. Otherwise there's no "hustle" in the movie and the original title and version have nothing to do with dancing. In other words, it was a last minute "hook" they added for the international audience.
Reply:in the beginning the axe gang was going to kill some guy and they did in a very funny way, like dancing ..slow motion etc
Reply:The movie starts out with the oppositions boss in a police station being released. Then the AX gang is waiting for him when he gets out in the street.

Kung Fu Hustle.. Most Underrated Movie Ever?

When I saw the previews for this movie, i didn't know what to make of it. The movie seemed to make no sense and it showed that basically it was a live version of Looney Tunes (they kept showing the Landlady running around)

When I saw the movie last night it was MUCH better than what I was expecting. It was very, very well done. The music, the comedy, the action, and the musical numbers were all perfect. Watching the movie I can see where and how the exaggerations of martial arts movies come into play.

I really recommend that you all watch this movie; but DO NOT listen to the English audio cause it sucks.

Kung Fu Hustle.. Most Underrated Movie Ever?
it's one of the most underrated kung fu movies, ever. the stunts are incredible and the film is very funny. i think that had this film been made and released during the mid 80s for example, then stephen chow would've been as big a star as jackie chan. his films although are often comical and humourous have at times been compared to some of jackie chan's earlier efforts. he was the 90s version of chan, in the same way that jet li was the 90s version of bruce lee. but of course, you cannot compare those two together as lee was a legend in his own right. i'd also recommend king of beggers, as well as shaolin soccer which you can buy on dvd via the hong kong legends website.

look out for kung fu hustle 2 in the cinema next year!
Reply:It was a GREAT movie. It reminded me of what the Coen Brothers would do if they did Chinese movies. My son and I loved it.
Reply:I loved that movie I thought it was really really good.
Reply:Personally, i thought it was amazing.

I've never seen so much variety in fighting styles in a kung fu movie. I thought i was watching a live action dragonball Z or ninja scroll at one point.

The only thing i didnt like about the movie was the ending, they made it out to look like they might make another, but i havent heard anything yet. I can only hope....
Reply:Good on ya mate. Subtitles w/original language is always the best. Also if you haven't already rent Shaolin Soccer. Same guys did this movie, also underrated.
Reply:I completely agree. I was hyped about this movie from the moment I saw it however, as I'm a fan of Stephen Chow and his works. If you liked Kung Fu Hustle you should also look into Shaolin Soccer. It's another funny martial arts movie with Stephen Chow.

Everyone who I've made watch this movie says they love it as well. I don't think it was very well promoted is all...

According to IMDB, Kung Fu Hustle 2 is supposed to come out in 2008.
Reply:Love that movie!

"What're you looking at? Never seen an ice cream thief before? Muahahahaha!"
Reply:For the kung-fu genre I think it is extremely underrated....and another film I like and think is underrated is "Snatch" with Brad Pitt and Jason Statham. It's a differant genre but it's really humorous and the film style is great. I especially like the character Bullet Tooth Tony.
Reply:I'm glad I agree with so many folks here. I caught this movie by happenstance on cable one day and was very impressed. The combination of over-the-top humor and fantastic kung-fu fights was awesome. I would highly recommend this movie.

More movies like Kung-Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer?

A friend lent me both movies over the weekend, and they are tied for my new favorite. Any suggestions for similar kung-fu-comedy flicks?

More movies like Kung-Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer?
...although not as dynamic as "Shaolin Soccor" and "Kung Fu Hustle", but still just as funny and action-packed, you might try the recent "Kung Fu Mahjong" trilogy.

The films feature many of the same wacky character actors, as in "...Soccer" and "...Hustle", with the same riotous and outrageously screwball comedy results!!!

Check 'em out!!!.....
Reply:haha theres heaps.........( theres some that arent funny )

Is Kung Fu hustle Any good?

Im thinking of getting the DVD of Kung Fu hustle, coz I can get it cheap, but is it any good?

Is Kung Fu hustle Any good?
I liked it. I thought it was pretty funny. My family thought it was pretty entertaining (my 5yr old loves it). We went ahead and bought it and although I don't watch it frequently (like I do with my all time favs) we still enjoy it every once in awhile.
Reply:yes very funny go for it
Reply:its not just good its great
Reply:dude !!!!

that is super funny

specially the pinball fighting effect
Reply:hahahahahaha....that's what I thought of it! Very funny, with lots of action and good old chop-socky kung-fu stuff. Actually if you can tell me where to get it cheap I want a copy for my collection!
Reply:Oh yeah, worth picking up... I've gotten hooked on Stephen Chow since Shaolin Soccer.
Reply:A fun film with some great choreographed fight scenes.
Reply:There were some okay parts in the movie, but I didn't enjoy it much and stopped watching (even though I paid like $4 for it on on demand) after like half the movie was over.
Reply:I bought it. And I NEVER buy DVD's. Last one I bought was Half Baked.
Reply:It's a fun movie. Go for it.
Reply:I think you should go get it. I got it and it was freakin hilarious.
Reply:i thought it was really good
Reply:Kung Fu Hustle (Chinese: 功夫; pinyin: Gōngfu) is a martial arts film first released in Hong Kong in December 2004. It was released for general debut in the United States on April 22, 2005 after showing in Los Angeles and New York for two weeks. The North American version of its DVD was released on August 8, 2005.

Kung Fu Hustle is a humorous parody and mockery of the wuxia genre, played and directed by Stephen Chow. It contains most of the characteristics of a typical wuxia movie, with a lot of ridiculous exaggerations, serious situations and comic plots.

The use of visual effects have been widely acclaimed and the almost comic book style of the movie are its most striking features. It is in stark contrast to recent Kung Fu movies that have made an impact in the West, such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero. Despite the computer-generated imagery and cartoonish scenes in the second half of the movie, the movie pays tribute to many famous Kung Fu film veterans from the 1970s who were all real martial artists in their own right. Many early fight scenes were packed with real Chinese martial arts.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The movie is set in a fictitious Chinese city around the 1930s. In many ways, the city resembles Shanghai in its architectural design and culture. The film was shot there, but the residents portrayed speak Cantonese, which is found in southern China's Canton Province. During this time, China has fallen victim to many gangs, but the most highly feared is the Axe Gang, the axe being their primary weapon. Even the police respect them, paying the gang to get rid of rival clans. The city that takes the main stage in the film is one controlled by the Axe Gang. Only the poor neighborhood of Pig Sty Alley is immune to them. Then on one calm day two homeless young men, Sing (Chow) and Bone, wander into the slum posed as members of the Axe Gang. Their goal of the day is to cheat money off of the barber, until the real Axe Gang shows up, and they are not happy. Finally, three of the villagers fight off the notorious gangsters. However, the gang start paying hired assassins to get rid of the Pig Sty residents, and Sing is trying everything to be a member of the gang. However, should he get the opportunity to become an Axe man, will he see the good side of life and become the true man he really is, which is a one-in-a-million natural-born kung fu genius?
Reply:its so funny
Reply:well, its in fact a great movie! if you haven't seen any of stephen chow's films before, then this is a good one to start with. you can also give shaolin soccer a wizz too. that's a fab film too. he's very popular in hong kong and relased a couple of films during the 90s back then. some see him as the successor to jackie chan and jet li, although he is in his 40s. the humour in his films is somewhat similar to jackie chan's comedy kung fu flicks
Reply:it's pretty good
Reply:It's an all right movie. I wouldn't say it was fantastic, but I would probably watch it if it came on. I think it's interesting how they switch from Chinese to English every once in a while.
Reply:it is a cheap production ! you better get Enter the dragon 1973 with Bruce Lee

Kung Fu Hustle character?

There is a character in Kung Fu Hustle who shows up once or twice, but apparently not long enough to be considered a character.

Her longest part I think was when she was arguing with the Land Lady after they were attacked by the Axe Gang, the Land Lady reffered to her as "Bucktooth Janet" or something like that, which was probably more than likely an insult.

So if anyone knows who I'm talking about and what her name is, please do tell.

Was Kung Fu Hustle a masterpiece?

I liked Kung Pow too but Kung Fu Hustle is hard to beat, IMO.

Was Kung Fu Hustle a masterpiece?
yeah it is. such a combination of comedy, mystery and love story of course .lol. you promise to pick me as the best answer you should keep it. lol
Reply:good! now answer my questions! Report It

Reply:YES! IT WAS PERFECTION!
Reply:No, it really wasn't
Reply:A very entertaining, unique, funny, and artsy movie

but not really a masterpiece.

It won many awards, but awards are not the only criteria to be called a "masterpiece".

This is my opinion though. It depends so much on the viewer.

It's one the year's best movies though! I will confidently say that!

I laughed through so many scenes!
Reply:Admittedly I love Kung Pow, even though it was not favorable by critics. Guess its my guity pleasure (Mmm ya Uncle Betty).

By no means I would consider Kung Fu Hustle a masterpiece. Since a masterpiece, would be almost flawless art form or near perfection. It was very funny in some parts!! Not putting down the movie, I believe it could have been much better.
